ReMembering the Borderlands — Live at Bedrule Church

An evening with historian and storyteller Mary Craig, exploring the Borders origins of the most significant saint of the Anglo-Saxon north.

This Evening: St Cuthbert — From the Banks of the Tweed to the Edge of the World

Before Durham Cathedral, before Lindisfarne, before the miraculous wanderings of his relics across northern England — Cuthbert was a man of the Celtic church who became a monk at Old Melrose, on the banks of the Tweed. Not Melrose Abbey, but the original monastery on the river's bend, where the monastic life of the most important saint of the Anglo-Saxon north began.

From there he journeyed to the very edge of the world — the hermit's cell on Inner Farne, surrounded by sea and sky.

Mary Craig follows Cuthbert from his Borders origins to his extraordinary afterlife, and explores what it means that this place, these hills, these rivers, have shaped saints as well as wizards.

The Series

ReMembering the Borderlands is a series of four monthly evenings running April through July 2026. Four figures from the Scottish Borders. Philosopher, Prophet, Wizard, Saint.

29 April — Duns Scotus: The Subtle Doctor
27 May — Merlin: The Wild Man of the Woods
24 June — Michael Scott: The Wizard of the Eildons
29 July — St Cuthbert: From the Tweed to the Edge of the World

Each evening is a gathering — not a lecture. A talk by Mary W Craig, followed by community sharing and open conversation. If you have stories, memories, local knowledge, or family connections to the figure being discussed, this is the space to share them.

Everything shared becomes part of a growing, community-built living archive of Borders heritage as part of our MetaMapping the BorderLands.

Book each evening separately or come to all four.

The Venue

Bedrule Church is a historic stone church in Teviotdale, recently taken into community ownership by Bedrule Church Future. We're pleased to be launching this series from a building with its own story of community custodianship — a space held by the people, for the people.

Bedrule sits between Hawick and Jedburgh, easily reached from across the Scottish Borders via the B6358.

On the Evening

6:30 PM — Doors open
7:00 PM — Welcome, introductions, and the talk begins (40–45 minutes)
7:45 PM — Community sharing and open conversation (15–20 minutes)
8:30 PM — Approx. Close
