Inspired by the Merrimack River, which flows through Haverhill and several New England cities on its 117-mile journey to the Atlantic, the group adopted the name “River Bards” to reflect both place and purpose. Over the past decade, the River Bards have hosted more than fifty featured poets and welcomed several hundred community members to share their voices through open mic readings. The series has also provided a platform for emerging youth voices, including students from Haverhill High School’s poetry and spoken word clubs, who perform each year. "Voices of the River Bards" brings together the work of poets who have participated in these open mics over the years, capturing the spirit, diversity, and creative energy of the community. The anthology is curated by Andrea Blackington, Daniel Speers, and Thomas F. Wylie, with Erin Padilla of Creative Haverhill serving as Artistic Director, and Carol Crowell of Crowell Editing and Publishing as Consulting Editor. The cover art, Heart of the Valley, was painted in 2015 by local artist Mark Hayden and reflects the deep connection between the region’s landscape and its creative voices.
