- **Event Description**: On October 8, 1862, the Pleasant Hill Shakers listened fearfully to the booming of cannons and other sounds of battle. Seventeen miles away, near the small community of Perryville, more than 20,000 Union and Confederate forces were locked in a pivotal battle. For the pacifist Shakers, the fall of 1862 was a particularly troubling time - soldiers marched through the community both before and after the battle, begged for food from the kitchens, camped in the surrounding fields, and stole the Shakers' horses. In the aftermath of the battle, one distraught Shaker diarist noted: "How awful to think of a wicked and bloody battle occurring in the midst of Zion on earth!"
