The Midwest Precision Gas Gun match follows the same proven format used by several successful and rapidly growing precision gas gun series nationwide.

What is a Precision Gas Gun match?

It’s a practical precision rifle match that blends PRS-style competition with semiautomatic rifles and Time Plus scoring.

PRS-style means competitors move through stages in squads, receive stage briefs with known target locations and distances, mentally rehearse their plan, and engage targets from a variety of practical shooting positions under time pressure.

Competitors will use semiautomatic centerfire rifles, most commonly AR15 or AR10 platforms, though rifle configuration is left to the shooter. The match features two divisions: LPVO and Open (see Divisions section for details).

Time Plus scoring means all stages are "hit-to-move" and have a 90-second time limit. Your score is total time, meaning your raw stage time plus a 20-second penalty per target that was not hit.

Divisions:

LPVO (GPR) Division:
The LPVO Division (low-power variable optic) is intended to reflect the spirit of the modern General Purpose Rifle (GPR): a rifle configured to perform reasonable well across a broad range of practical applications, rather than being highly optimized for a single specialized role.
A rifle qualifies for LPVO Division if it is equipped with an optic that meets the following requirements:
-Minimum magnification: 1-1.5x
-Maximum magnification: 10x or less
-Parallax: Fixed (non-adjustable)

Caliber and barrel length are not restricted.

Open Division:
Any rifle with an optic that does not meet LPVO Division requirements.

Targets, Positions, and Round Counts:

Target distances will be between 300 and 630 yards. Target sizes will be mostly 2-4 MOA, which will be designed around GPR rifles with .223/5.56 ballistics to ensure the match remains accessible and competitive across all divisions.

There will be an 80/20 ratio of positional/prone shooting. There will also be some unsupported shooting (standing, kneeling) mixed in.

The average stage will have 8 targets, and will be designed to be completed in 30-60 seconds. The match will consist of 8-10 stages. So plan to bring 200-300 rounds of ammunition.

Recommended Equipment:

Most successful competitors nationwide find that a .223/5.56 rifle capable of 1 MOA dispersion, with a 16-20" barrel, and a low-backpressure suppressor provides an effective balance of:

-Adequate precision and ballistics
-Reliable function
-Wide factory ammo availability
-Low recoil
-Manageable weight and balance for offhand and positional shooting
-Reduced concussion and gas blowback

Larger calibers (e.g., 6mm ARC, 6.5 Creedmoor) offer improved ballistics and reduced wind drift, but come with tradeoffs such as increased recoil, less reliable feeding, and reduced barrel life. As a result, they are not necessarily advantageous over a well-configured .223/5.56 rifle.

Suppressors are recommended, but not required.

Brass catchers are recommended if you plan to save your brass.

Other recommended equipment that is also common to PRS-style competition: bipod, support bag, ballistics solver, binos/spotting scope, rangefinder, mag pouches with spare magazines, eye and ear protection.

Chamber flags will be required at all times when not actively shooting.
