Our program will feature James Hessler for an exploration
of The Battle of Little Big Horn using battlefield analysis, historical context and insights into a story that continues to fascinate audiences 150 years later! 

Few events in American military history have inspired as much fascination and enduring mystery as the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Aside from Gettysburg, no battle has been more scrutinized or debated. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the June 25–26, 1876 fight.

The colorful and controversial Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer dominates the story. His attack on a large Lakota and Northern Cheyenne village along the Little Big Horn River resulted in the deaths of Custer and more than 200 men under his immediate command. In the aftermath, the battle quickly became shrouded in mythmaking, conflicting accounts, and finger-pointing. Will historians ever fully untangle what happened on the Little Big Horn?

In addition to his many publications, James Hessler co-created and hosts the popular Battle of Gettysburg Podcast, reaching a global audience of history enthusiasts. He has appeared as a public historian in major media such as the History Channel, NPR, Travel Channel, PCN-TV, and in programs and content development with the American Battlefield Trust. Besides Gettysburg, Hessler has led battlefield tours at numerous sites across the country. He currently serves in a board or advisory capacity for Gettysburg History (Adams County Historical Society), Gettysburg Museum of History, and the Little Bighorn Associates.

This 7:30 program is open to the public, but you must reserve your 6:30 dinner by Sunday, September 6th, by contacting Paige Troiano-Rodgers at paigehfcwrt@gmail.com or 240-370-9173. The family-style dinner this month includes fried chicken, pork and beans, coleslaw, choice of fruit and drinks. The dinner cost is $20, payable at the door. If your plans change after our reservation deadline, we ask that you reimburse us for payment of your dinner.
