introducing us to Cartes de Visite!

Cartes de Visite, mass-produced photographic images, were made popular just prior to the start of the Civil War. The outbreak of the war only increased the desire to have one’s image taken, not only as mementos for loved ones, but perhaps as the result of the human instinct to be remembered. Since these photos could be made at an inexpensive cost, they became accessible to nearly everyone. It was not uncommon for soldiers especially to have many of these pictures made to use as calling cards. Due to their popularity, hundreds of thousands of these images still exist today, giving us many clues into the soldiers and civilians captured. Join us as we analyze these images and understand how to uncover the fascinating clues within them!

Together, Joseph Stahl and Matt Borders have published four books in their Faces of Union Soldiers series. Joseph Stahl grew up in St. Louis where he received BS and MS degrees from Missouri University of Science and Technology and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. After retiring, Joe became a volunteer and NPS Licensed Battlefield Guide at Antietam and Harpers Ferry. His articles have been published in Gettysburg Magazine, Antietam Journal, Washington Times, Civil War Historian, and more.

Matt Borders holds a BA in United States History with a focus in the American Civil War and a MS in Historic Preservation. He worked for the National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program for six years, during which he became a certified battlefield guide at Antietam National Battlefield and Harpers Ferry National Historic Park. He is currently the President of the Frederick County Civil War Round Table.

This program is open to the public, but you must reserve your dinner by Sunday, February 8th, by contacting Paige Troiano-Rodgers at paigehfcwrt@gmail.com. The family-style dinner this month includes spaghetti or baked spaghetti, tossed salad, garlic knots, dessert, and drink. The dinner cost is $20, payable at the door. If your plans change after our reservation deadline, we ask that you reimburse us for payment of your dinner.
