We have a date for the rescheduled Upper Valley Tracking Club meetup: Sunday, March 1st from 10am-noon. Fingers crossed that we have some reasonably fresh snow to work with!


In past meetups, we’ve gotten to study extensive networks of rodent tracks (we were thinking deermice) that covered an entire snowy hillside. Just beyond that scene was the trail of something much larger, that we could actually tell had jumped straight down about a six-foot cliff. To keep following that trail, we would've had to do some significant rock scrambling.

Exploring one trail a stone’s throw from the Mink Brook Community forest, the Hanover Conservancy’s Executive Director Barry Matthews led us to the homebase of a porcupine where it had scattered hemlock needles and all around (and stacked scat very neatly). We’re excited to return to the Hanover woods at the start of March to see what this rich mosaic of habitats might have on display.

We are lucky that Vermont is home to such expert wildlife tracking educators as Hardwick’s Fox Paw School and Montpelier’s North Branch Nature Center staff. These teachers frequently come to the Upper Valley to offer full-day intensive trainings on different tracking skills - keep an eye out for upcoming training opportunities!

In the meantime, there are loads of tracks on the ground for us to practice. Designed as a free, community-oriented opportunity to learn and practice wildlife tracking, the Upper Valley Tracking Club invites both experienced trackers and newcomers to see what stories we might be able to put together during a couple hours in the local woods.

Bring your favorite tracking guide (we’ll have some to share!) and extra layers for added comfort while we work together to read all that we can find written across the snowy landscapes. We hope you join us, and please spread the word!
