Derya Yıldırım und ihre Band Grup Şimşek machen Musik jenseits von Grenzen. Mit „outernational“ bezeichnen sie ihren Sound, der zwar tief in der traditionellen Musik Anatoliens und der türkischen Psychedelia der späten 1960er- bis frühen 1970er-Jahre verwurzelt ist, sich jedoch durch die unterschiedlichen kulturellen Einflüsse des internationalen Ensembles stetig erweitert. So wurde die Sängerin und Multiinstrumentalistin Derya Yıldırım in Deutschland als Tochter türkischer Eltern geboren, Gitarrist Antonin Voyant und Keyboarder Graham Mushnik kommen aus Frankreich, und die Schlagzeugerin Helen Wells stammt aus Südafrika.

Das neue Album der Band, „Yarın Yoksa“, taucht thematisch tief ein in persönliches Leid und kollektiven Widerstand, erzählt Geschichten über Entwurzelung und Verlust – und steckt dabei doch voller Lebensfreude und Vitalität. Neben Eigenkompositionen enthält "Yarın Yoksa", was so viel bedeutet wie „Wenn es kein Morgen gibt“, auch drei traditionelle anatolische Volkslieder, die Derya zum Teil noch von ihrer Großmutter kennt. Doch bei aller Bezugnahme auf traditionelles Liedgut bleibt der Grundgedanke Deryas stets derselbe: Wer ein altes Volkslied spielt, muss ihm etwas Eigenes hinzufügen – „sonst könnte man genauso gut die alte Platte auflegen“. Im Fall von "Yarın Yoksa" fügen die unterschiedlichen kulturellen Einflüsse des multinationalen Ensembles der anatolischen Musik einen völlig einzigartigen und frischen Sound hinzu, der das Genre gleichzeitig voranbringt und seine reiche Tradition würdigt.Die Songs der Band sind getragen von einem unwiderstehlichen Groove, während sich der musikalische Stil von Stück zu Stück wandelt – jeder Track steht für sich, fügt sich aber gleichzeitig nahtlos ins Gesamtbild des Albums ein.
