McDonald for a day of conversation, discussion, and hands-on research focused on the people, places, and stories that have too often been overlooked or left out of the historical record. 10 AM–Noon | In Plain Sight Historic preservation has never been just about old buildings. It is also about deciding which people, communities, and experiences are considered important enough to remember. In this workshop, we’ll explore how those decisions have been made and why underrepresented We’ll consider how everyday places, gathering spaces, neighborhoods, and cultural landscapes can tell stories that aren't found in traditional histories—and what happens when communities have a voice in deciding what is worth preserving. 1–3 PM | History Is Everywhere Some of the stories missing from our history books are still right here. This hands-on workshop will introduce practical ways to research the histories of communities and places that have been overlooked, underdocumented, or left out of traditional collections. We’ll explore how photographs, newspapers, oral histories, family records, buildings, maps, objects, archives, and online resources can help piece those stories together. Participants will also learn how to approach community history thoughtfully and respectfully, especially when working with stories that have not always been told on their own terms. You can attend one workshop or join us for the full day. You don’t need to be a historian or have research experience.
