Her debut collection, FREELAND (Alice James, 2025) was recently released, and she also created and edited That's a Pretty Thing to Call It: Prose and Poetry by Artists Teaching in Carceral Institutions (New Village Press, 2023). Her work appears in POETRY, jubilat, Split this Rock, The Rumpus, and elsewhere. Leigh works from an anti-carceral lens, and facilitates writing workshops and classes when she can, often remotely, through institutions and organizations including Poetry Foundation, the Institute for Justice and Opportunity, and NYU. He/his craft is healing from the intergenerational trauma of having to hide his creative/spiritual power to survive. His work has been recognized by the Science Fiction Poetry Association and anthologized in Nombono: Anthology of Speculative Poetry by BIPOC Creators from Around the World. Owólabi is a regular contributor to Riverwise, Geez, Therapeutic Edgelands, and Against The Current magazines. In collaboration with his partner, sculptor/ publisher Bridget Quinn, he is text editor of Bullet*Train, a magazine chronicling Detroit’s revolutionary culture and making meaning, a zine for people with chronic illness. His poetry chapbook, was published by AWE Society Press and is an artistic echo of grief from Aboyade’s brother Lee’s transition after suicide. His first book, Hum (2013), won a Beatrice Hawley Award and an American Library Association Notable Book Award and was an NAACP Image Award nominee. He was the 2014–2016 Kenyon Review Fellow at Kenyon College and a recipient of the Civitella Ranieri Fellowship in Italy. He was a Visiting Poet at Smith College, and he serves as Distinguished Writer at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. May has taught poetry in Detroit public schools and worked as a freelance sound engineer. He has taught in the Vermont College of Fine Arts MFA program and codirects, with Tarfia Faizullah, the Organic Weapon Arts Chapbook and Video Series.
