As the world shifts beneath them, an aristocratic family clings to memories, keeping up appearances, and a fading past — while outside, the future is already knocking. In this gripping, funny version of Chekhov’s comedy, the timeless clash between progress and nostalgia is brought into sharp focus. Set in a world that feels all too familiar — economically unstable, emotionally fraught, and painfully divided. Performed in the round, this intimate yet epic production pulls you into the centre of the action. Expect laughter, heartbreak, and the unmistakable sound of change. About the production My new version of the play is faithful to the original while giving an immediacy to the language. It will feel like it’s set in early twentieth century Russia, but with a contemporary essence. There will be some singing and dancing, but if neither is your forte then it shouldn’t put you off - I’m looking for a great family of actors. About the characters Liubov Ranevskaya (50s, female) - forthright, generous and emotionally fragile. She’s been away in Paris with a doomed love, fast-spending the small amount of money she has left. She’s returning to the family estate which she owns. She can’t face up to reality, living in the nostalgia of a past that doesn’t exist any more. Anya (late teens/early 20s, female) - Ranevskaya’s daughter. Impulsive, a dreamer, she thinks their happiness is just around the corner. Varya (20s, female), Raneyvskaya’s adopted daughter, she’s been looking after the estate. She’s sensible and sensitive. Exasperated at how her mother gives away money. Waiting for a marriage proposal from Lopakhin. Leonid Gaev (late 50s/60s, male), Ranevskaya’s brother and a fun uncle, he’s been left at home while she cavorted across Europe. He’s ineffectual, sentimental and can’t face reality. Ermolai Lopakhin (40s/50s, male), brought up by serfs (those obligated to serve nobility) he’s now an upwardly mobile businessman. He has money and prospects. He might be the answer to Ranevskaya’s financial ruin. Pyotr Trofimov (20s/30s, male) an eternal student, he seemingly can’t stop studying. He is passionate about seizing the opportunity for change. He’s critical of the aristocracy and believes in the prosperity of the working class. He’s in love with Anya. Boris Simeonov-Pishchik (50s, male) - a constantly indebted landowner who keeps borrowing money from Ranevskaya. He’s a joker, always dreaming up big ideas to little success. Charlotta Ivanovna (30s/40s, female) - governess to Anya, she’s a former circus performer, always doing magic tricks. She doesn’t know who her parents are and has always felt rudderless. German in the original, but can be another nationality. Semyon Eipikhodov (20s/30s, male), a hapless accounting clerk, he’s clumsy and disaster-prone. Glass always half full, he’s desperately in love with Dunyasha Dunyasha (20s/30s, female), a maid in the household, bored and restless, she wants more. She fancies Yasha and is constantly rejecting Epikhodov. Firs (80s, male or female), the senior servant of the household for generations. She can’t get used to the modern world. Caring but brittle and set in her ways. Yasha (20s/30s, male) - a hanger on who has travelled to Paris with Ravenskaya. He flirts with Dunyasha, but doesn’t respect her. Selfish and self-centred, trying to forget his poor upbringing and be someone he’s not. Homeless person (any age from 20s upwards, male or female) - brief, but important appearance. Would ideally be able to sing. We’re also looking for party guests to appear in one scene, which will be a minimal commitment Play readings are not just for prospective actors, but for anyone who would like to join in reading the play – or just listen to it being read. The readings are informal social occasions when the bar is open - we enjoy meeting new people and welcoming them to our club. There is no obligation to audition for the play or even to read – and there’s no need to book, just turn up!
