Occasionally at Paul Henry's we have given an opportunity to
true "outsider" artists who exhibit talent, passion and flair
but have no formal art training and no record of showing their
work. Such is the case of Anthony Serrano. Take a moment to
read his compelling story below and then make a plan to attend
his reception here at Paul Henry's on Saturday, November 22nd,
1pm until 9pm. We are allowing a wide eight hour window for
this event so that you may attend when it is convenient for you.
Paul Henry's Art Gallery is located at 416 Sibley, Hammond, IN.
Parking lots are on the east side of the gallery and across Sibley.
You may also find street parking along Hohman Avenue.

Anthony Serrano's journey into the Arts has been ongoing since he was a young man. Through the years art was an important part of his architectural studies and his subsequent engineering career.
Art also was an important part of his years as a single parent
raising his daughters.

As with many of us, circumstances change and 4 years ago at the
beginning of COVID Tony lost his grandmother, aunt and mother.
The stress caught up to him during this time and he ignored his
own health issues including hypertension, having COVID and coping with his personal losses. He had a serious stroke and found himself contemplating his very existence.

As Tony struggled to learn to walk again and make sense of his new reality, he tried to turn to what he knew: the hands-on familiarity of woodworking that he had pursued throughout his life. However, he was unable to move his body the way he wanted and his mind swirled with self-doubt. "I found myself sitting in my work shop unable to see myself being who I had always been," he recalls.

That's when he came upon an idea to paint, paint anything. He started with some old sketches and drawings he had saved and tried to recreate them on scrap plywood.

At first he used house paint. "I started to splash paint around and
mostly disappointed myself," he says. "Yet again I was not able to do something I set my mind to." Repeatedly he tried until one day in his rage and frustration he recognized that he had made something abstract that appealed to him.

"I stopped trying to paint a specific image and started expressing
myself by letting go of my preconceived rigid ideas. What was holding me back from recovering from my stroke and shattered paradigm wasn't my broken body and mind. It was my ability to accept the changes of my reality as it now had been altered," he states.

Looking back on his life, Tony assessed things he was proud of and things he'd like to forget, but when he had the stroke it took him to a place where he felt completely powerless. It was painting that shifted his view of himself and the world around him. Making art freed him from his old view of who he was. "It has allowed me," he says "to be back in the changing sands on the shores of my life once again."

"My hope is to share my new perspective with others in my paintings. Now I see life with a lens of openness to new things and I have found new ways of expressing the world that I see and feel," says Tony. "The journey to relax my self-imposed grip on reality in order to feel the world and myself in it, lovingly, honestly and caringly is not only my goal but I believe it is also a cathartic tool we all might need when we are overtaken by desperation."

"My recent new outlook on life and the associated pursuit of my
art has taken me to interactions with social organizations that
benefit needy parts of our community such as Living Hope Church, Hal Kelly Respite Foundation and Community Change Center. These experiences have allowed me to see and express my own human nature, show my art and continue to evolve as a sentient person."

We hope you will join us in the reception here at Paul Henry's Art
Gallery on Saturday, November 22nd, 1pm til 9pm. We invite you to attend early or later on, whenever is convenient for you. 416 Sibley, Hammond, IN. Call 219-678-5015 for more info.
