How does the deliberate arrangement of image, space, or material form alter the way people understand themselves and the institutions that govern their lives?Consider two cases from Professor Jennifer Milam’s research. At the Russian imperial estates, Catherine the Great incorporated Chinese pavilions, classical temples, and Gothic ruins within a single landscape programme, deploying visual culture not as decoration but as political argument, projecting cosmopolitan authority and staking a claim to Enlightenment belonging on the world stage. Across the Atlantic, Thomas Jefferson designed his retreat at Poplar Forest as a spatial embodiment of republican ideals, translating Enlightenment philosophy directly into landscape form. In both cases, the designed environment was an institution built to carry meaning.Closer to home, Hamilton Gardens offers a compelling illustration of this principle. Conceived as a living museum of humanity, its collection of themed gardens from across time and cultures demonstrates that designed space has always been one of the primary ways human beings communicate who they are and what they believe.Professor Milam has spent three decades examining precisely these questions. In this professorial lecture, she draws on that scholarship to argue that the challenge of making ideas visible remains urgent.
