Join fellow Morris devotees for a joint run with the Auckland and Waikato clubs. The day begins in suitably grand fashion with a Classic Car Breakfast Meet, before we set off on a scenic country drive to the Glen Afton Railway. You can opt to join us at the railway station if the museum or early start isn’t your thing!
The Hamilton Vintage & Classic Car Club, together with the Classic Car Museum, hosts a monthly Classic Car Breakfast Meet at the museum's car park, open to all. The event typically features an eclectic display of classic vehicles, with Morris in its rightful place of honour and a sprinkling of lesser marques doing their best to keep up.
Event Details:
• What: Breakfast meet is free, cooked breakfasts and coffee available to purchase from the Jukebox Diner. The museum (Adults $20, Seniors $12) will also be open and well worth a visit.
• When: Arrive anytime between 8:00 am and 10:00am.
• Where: Classics Museum, 11 Railside Place, Frankton, Hamilton.
• For those traveling from the north the museum is easily accessible:
o Turn off SH1 onto SH1c
o Take Rifle Range Road off the roundabout and then immediately turn left into Railside Road.
o Once on Railside Road take the second left into the museum car park
• Getting there: Attendees should make their own way to the car museum. Those travelling from Auckland can use the motorway or opt for quieter back roads. A group will be meeting up at The BP service station on the Southern Motorway at 6.30am to drive down together. Ben is your contact.
• Parking: We will attempt to park together in a section of the car park near the plane! (You can’t miss it!) I know, I know, a plane at a car museum!
PART 2: COUNTRY RUN TO GLEN AFTON RAILWAY
The group will depart the museum at 10:30am for a leisurely drive, lasting approximately 60 minutes, to the Glen Afton railway. If you are not an early riser you could go direct and meet at the Glen Afton Railway for 11.30am or turn up in time to join us as we leave the museum. The choice is yours.
Destination Details:
• What: The Glen Afton Branch is a historic railway line, originally built to serve local coal mines. The line now offers public rides on steam and diesel-hauled carriages, operated by a volunteer crew. So a trip on a train and a bite to eat, not necessarily in that order, we’ll decide on the day! • Where: 1153A Rotowaro Road, Pukemiro Junction, Huntly.
• Parking: Parking at the railway station is limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis.
• Train Timetable: Trains depart at 10:00, 10:45, 11:30, 12:15, 13:00, 13:45, 14:30 and 15:15. The group aims to catch the 12:15 train. Purchase your own tickets at the ticket office: Adults $15, Children $5.
• Food: Food and drink is available for purchase at the stations. Note: There will be a "tax" collected on food, with the amount depending on how appetising it appears! I’ll be personally in charge of this tax collection, remember there are only two things assured in life!
DIRECTIONS FROM THE HAMILTON CAR MUSEUM TO THE RAILWAY
Upon leaving the museum, turn right onto Railside Road then turn left onto Rifle Range Road.
At the end of Rifle Range Road, turn right, which will bring you to the Dinsdale roundabout. From the roundabout, proceed on State Highway 23 heading towards Raglan, signposted.
As you approach Te Uku, keep an eye out for Ohautira Road on your right. Turn right onto Ohautira Road
If you pass the Waitomo petrol station at Te Uku, you have missed the turn and should turn around to find Ohautira Road.
Follow Ohautira Road, passing through Glen Afton along the way, until you arrive at the railway station. The journey should take approximately 60 minutes, allowing for a scenic and relaxed drive through the countryside.
PART 3: RETURN JOURNEY
Once you are ready, make your own way home.
