Thousands of native species are listed as threatened or at risk in Aotearoa. This hui is for the people who are taking action to turn things around.

From the kanakana / piharau, and the mātuku-hūrepo bittern, to the Māui and Hector’s dolphins and pekapeka tou-roa, long-tailed bats – this hui is for everyone working to restore habitats and protect our most endangered taonga species.

The programme centres Māori and community leadership across freshwater, land and marine ecosystems. Speakers include iwi leaders, rangatahi, scientists, innovators, artists and grassroots organisers working on the front lines of conservation across the motu. 

Co-Chair Tāwera Nikau says this moment matters:

"Many of our taonga species are right on the edge. This hui is about facing that truth honestly and backing the people and solutions that are already making a difference. When iwi and communities lead, real, sustainable change happens."

Co-Chair Emma Giesen says: 

"It's about joining the dots between the amazing people and projects across the motu, connecting mātauranga Māori, science and community action, and giving people practical pathways to restore the mauri of our ecosystems."

Rangatahi leadership is central to the programme. Our young people are already leading with courage and creativity — and this hui creates space for their voices.
