Thalea String Quartet: Something Golden

Thalea String Quartet brings a curious, high-energy approach to the string quartet, pairing a major Haydn quartet with bold contemporary voices and a new Canadian commission. Joseph Haydn’s “String Quartet in C major,” Op. 33, No. 3 anchors the program, with movements that show his sharp wit, clear architecture, and gift for turning small ideas into music full of character. Terry Riley’s “Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector” shifts the ear into a hypnotic, meditative sound world, where pulse and colour take the lead. Gabriella Smith’s “Carrot Revolution” adds a quick, kinetic edge, with bright textures and a sense of momentum that feels immediate. Akshaya Avril Tucker’s “Radha in the Forest” offers a more lyrical, inward atmosphere, drawing on Indian classical influence in a way that feels thoughtful and personal. Multiple GRAMMY Award-winning composer and cellist Andrew Yee brings an intimate, reflective counterpoint with “Something Golden,” a work with a warm, luminous quality. Rounding out the program is a new commission by Canadian composer India Gailey, written for Thalea String Quartet and heard here alongside these widely different musical voices.
