We are partnering with Pacific Birds Habitat Joint Venture and Waimea Valley for a campaign to highlight the ʻalae ʻula or Hawaiian Gallinule, an endangered waterbird unique to Hawaiʻi. There are only around 700 left in the world (on Oʻahu and Kauaʻi). Join us for a volunteer day to protect and celebrate the ʻalae ʻula! We will have partner booths to share about their inspiring work, a special ʻalae ʻula oli, and a cultural tour through the valley.

Volunteer tasks include:
Pond Work (Teens & Adults)
Volunteers will wade into the ponds to help clear overgrown aquatic plants and remove weeds along the edges, improving open water and healthy habitat for our resident ʻalae ʻula. This hands-on work supports the balance of the wetland ecosystem that these native birds rely on. (tabiʻs and board shorts recommended)
Stream & Estuary Work (Keiki & Adults)
Help restore stream and estuary habitat by removing invasive plants along the banks and planting native hala to stabilize soil and reduce erosion. This work strengthens the natural systems that support clean flowing wai and safe nesting areas for ʻalae ʻula.

Date: Saturday, May 16, 2026
Time: 9:00am – 1:00pm
Location: Waimea Valley, Oʻahu
What to bring: Picnic lunch (there is also a concession where you can purchase food), clothes that can get dirty, snacks, water bottle.

All participants will need to sign a waiver. Minors are welcome but need to be accompanied by an adult. All volunteers get free access to the Valley. Registration is required, please sign up here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe6lCeTiYSRY0Ci_Ve2V37CdYLm3gegXKRqYuCwgYlb8RomFA/viewform
