Reserve your spot now!John and Dorothy Quincy HancockAmerica’s First, First CouplePresented by Friends of the Indian King Tavern Museum and Jake Blouch and Kim Hanley of American Historical TheatreOn the eve of Revolution, Boston merchant John Hancock was one of the wealthiest men in the British Empire. Orphaned at a young age, John was adopted by his Uncle and Aunt, Thomas and Lydia Henchman Hancock. After young John graduated from Harvard, he was sent to London to work for the Hancock company and learn the business of Global trade. He thrived and built one of the largest import/export businesses in the British Empire. When it came time to settle down to married life, John’s Aunt Lydia would prevail in arranging a courtship between her nephew and no-one less than a girl with a Quincy pedigree, Dorothy, the daughter of Judge Edmund Quincy.During their long engagement, a shift in the colonies’ relationship with the British Crown fomented much discontent. Parliament and King George’s political suppression of the growing American mercantile economy turned John Hancock from a useful Servant of the Crown into a Leading Rebel Patriot. On April 14th, 1775 Dolly and John were in Lexington, Massachusetts when “the Shot Heard ‘Round the World” was fired. Newlyweds in 1776, Mr. and Mrs. John Hancock were both in Philadelphia with Dolly serving in an unofficial role as her husband’s secretary. They were both witnesses and participants in the acts leading up to the Revolution. He served as President of the Second Continental Congress and signed the Document proclaiming the United States to be ‘’’Free and Independent States” with a signature so large that George of England should be able to see it without his spectacles. With her family name and his fortune, John and Dolly Hancock could indeed be considered one of America’s first “Power Couples”.
