The Civil Rights Beach Wade-In Commemorative
“Wading Through History: How Civil Disobedience Leads to Civic Power”
From the Beach to the Ballot: Honoring the Fight for Access, Justice, and Voting Rights
Four community-centered organizations—Mississippi Votes, Roots of Hope Initiative, Legacy Business League, and the Griots Society of Gulfport—are proud to partner in hosting the Civil Rights Beach Wade-In Commemorative on Monday, June 23, 2025, from 5:30 PM to 7:15 PM.
This commemorative event honors the courageous acts of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Wade-Ins, where Black residents—including Dr. Gilbert Mason Sr.—peacefully challenged segregation by claiming their right to access public beaches. These bold demonstrations became a catalyst for civil rights change and continue to inspire the fight for justice and equal access today.
