We are thrilled to announce an upcoming FREE Lafayette event in Newport, New Hampshire, to be held on Monday, April 20th, 2026, at 3 pm ET. This event will result in the addition of our 16th Lafayette Trail marker in the Granite State.
Although Newport is already the recipient of a Lafayette Trail sign installed on the town green several years ago, the municipality has generously agreed to welcome a second marker to memorialize Lafayette's entrance into town from Wendell, now Sunapee, NH, on June 27th, 1825, as the Frenchman headed west toward Vermont.
This new project gained significant traction in town immediately following the bicentennial celebration last year. We would like to extend our most sincere appreciation to Mike Loftus and the entire team at the Heritage and Monuments & Memorials Commission for expressing strong support for this new Lafayette initiative in Newport.
Thanks also to Dean Stetson and the Newport Historical Society, as well as to Becky Rylander and the Sunapee Historical Society, for supporting this project. Lastly, we would like to acknowledge Newport Town Manager Kyle Harris, who guided us in the right direction from the very beginning.
This event will be our first Lafayette250 program in the Granite State. It is entirely free and open to the public. The program will start promptly at 3 pm ET and finish by 3:45 pm, following remarks from local dignitaries and officials.
The ceremony will take place at Hale Common, in Guild, NH, near the post office (16 Hale St, Guild, NH 03754). Plenty of free parking will be available on site for attendees. Attendees will have opportunities to take pictures of the new marker following the ceremony. This new marker was donated to the Town of Newport, NH, by The Lafayette Trail, Inc., with funding from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.
