De tentoonstelling markeert de Nederlandse viering van de Ierse feestdag St. Brigid’s Day en brengt twee vrouwelijke fotografische perspectieven samen op het Ierse veenlandschap: natuur in optima forma als technologisch, cultureel en ecologisch systeem in een voortdurend veranderend landschap.St. Brigid’s Day, op 1 februari, luidt in Ierland traditioneel het begin van de lente in. De dag staat al eeuwenlang symbool voor transformatie, zorg en vrouwelijke kennisoverdracht. In Groningen krijgt die viering een hedendaagse lading, waarin deze eeuwenoude feestdag samenkomt met fotografie. De tentoonstelling is samengesteld door de Ambassade van Ierland in Nederland.De ambassadeur van Ierland in Nederland, Ann Derwin, zal de tentoonstelling officieel openen, waarna professor Matthijs Schouten, ecoloog en filosoof verbonden aan Wageningen Universiteit en University College Cork, de historische rol van Nederlandse ecologen in het behoud van Ierse veengebieden belicht en reflecteert op veen als kruispunt van wetenschap, cultuur en ethiek.Tina Claffey & Bo ScheeringaDe Ierse Tina Claffey en de Groningse Bo Scheeringa benaderen het veen in Ierland vanuit verschillende perspectieven, maar met een gedeelde aandacht voor hoe technologie onze relatie tot het landschap vormt. Claffey gebruikt macrofotografie om het kwetsbare, microscopische leven van Ierse hoogvenen en hun onderlinge afhankelijkheid scherp te registreren.Waar Claffey vertraagt en verdiept, volgt Scheeringa het veen juist weer op landschappelijke en menselijke schaal. Zij werkt documentair en toont de hedendaagse turfwinning in Noordwest-Ierland. For centuries, the day has symbolised transformation, care and the transmission of female knowledge. In Groningen, this ancient tradition is given a contemporary interpretation, where photography becomes a medium through which past and present meet. The exhibition is curated by the Embassy of Ireland in the Netherlands.The Ambassador of Ireland to the Netherlands, Ann Derwin, will officially open the exhibition, after which Professor Matthijs Schouten, ecologist and philosopher affiliated with Wageningen University and University College Cork, will highlight the historical role of Dutch ecologists in the conservation of Irish peatlands and reflect on peat at the crossroads of science, culture, and ethics.Tina Claffey & Bo ScheeringaIrish photographer Tina Claffey and Groningen-based photographer Bo Scheeringa approach the Irish peatlands from different perspectives, yet share a focus on how technology mediates our relationship with landscape. Claffey uses macro photography to reveal the fragile, microscopic life of raised bogs, registering interdependence, vulnerability and biodiversity with great precision.Where Claffey slows down and zooms in, Scheeringa works on a human and landscape level. Her documentary practice follows contemporary turf cutting in northwest Ireland. Scheeringa’s photographs show how peat extraction practices, passed down through generations, are increasingly shaped and constrained by environmental legislation and climate policy.Together, the photographers present peatland as a terrain formed by both hands and models, by care and regulation, and by ongoing negotiation between humans and their environment.
