Maggie Mae’s welcomes local author Rebecca N. Thompson, MD, for a reading and conversation about Held Together: A Shared Memoir of Motherhood, Medicine, and Imperfect Love

About Held Together:
Held Together tells the story of Dr. Thompson’s complicated path to parenthood as a young doctor many years ago, woven into the stories of her patients, friends, and medical colleagues. From devastating to triumphant, from tear-stained to too-awkward-not-to-laugh, from universal to nearly unimaginable, these intimate first-person narratives capture the extraordinary moments hidden within ordinary lives and embrace—even celebrate—what can happen when nothing goes quite as we’d planned in building and sustaining our families. She will be joined in conversation by collaborator Anna David, whose chapter describes her experience with life-threatening pregnancy complications and her daughter’s extreme prematurity and extended stay in the neonatal intensive care unit. Their conversation will explore themes including how our perceptions of self are shaped by our experiences with the medical system, how to balance trusting our intuition about our own bodies with considering sometimes-conflicting advice from others who care for us, and how to parent through uncertainty when we (or our children) are facing medical complexity, especially when we don't yet know what influences a given condition or diagnosis might have on our lives.
