Info: Accurate tree identification is the foundation of good tree management, but it’s not always as simple as it seems. In this session, George Dickert walks attendees through common challenges in tree ID, including hybrid cultivars, seasonal variations, and misleading leaf traits. Participants will sharpen their diagnostic skills using real-world examples from urban settings.
Info: Invasive insects, diseases, and plants threaten the health of urban forests across the Southeast. Dr. Dave Coyle delivers an engaging, research-based overview of the most pressing invasive species currently affecting trees in the region, including emerging threats on the horizon. Learn what to watch for, how to respond, and how to communicate these issues with clients and the public.

Info: Some trees may be widely planted but poorly suited for urban environments, leading to long-term maintenance headaches. In this session, Briana Namuak highlights common "problem trees" and introduces resilient, site-appropriate alternatives. Attendees will leave with practical substitution ideas to improve urban canopy health and reduce future conflicts with infrastructure.
Info: Poor soil conditions and site design flaws are among the most underdiagnosed contributors to tree decline in urban settings. Nicole Goodman dives deep into the impacts of compaction, drainage, limited rooting volume, and construction damage. This session provides practical guidance on evaluating soil conditions, interpreting soil reports, and planning for better tree establishment and longevity.
Info: Note: Participants must be present for the entire training to be eligible to sign for recertification credits.
