First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln had several brothers and half-brothers who fought for the Confederacy, underscoring the deep divisions within her family during the American Civil War. Her brother Dr. George Rogers Clark Todd served as a Confederate surgeon and openly expressed hostility toward his brother-in-law, President Abraham Lincoln, once calling him “one of the greatest scoundrels unhung.” In total, eight of Mary Todd Lincoln’s siblings and half-siblings supported the Confederacy, and several died in battle.

Kevin Kaegy is the sixth generation of his family to live in Bond County. He has collected photos for nearly 50 years and served as president of Bond County Historical Society twice. He has been researching, writing, and speaking about Bond County, Hill’s Fort, and Abraham Lincoln for more than 40 years. He has co-authored books on local history: Greenville and Bond County from Arcadia Publishing, The Tales of Hill’s Fort, and Forts and Blockhouses of Early Illinois. He contributes articles to Bond County Genealogical Society’s twice-yearly e-Newsletter. He currently serves as a director on the BCHS board and as BCGS Vice President.

Bond County Historical Society celebrated its 70th birthday in 2025. It is dedicated to fostering awareness, understanding, research, preservation, and appreciation of history in Bond County. The society operates Bond County Museum and the One-Room School Museum, both in Greenville. Founded in 1981, Bond County Genealogical Society encourages the preservation, research, and dissemination of the rich genealogical heritage of Bond County. BCGS maintains a collection of resources at the Greenville Public Library.
