- **Event Name**: Cline Observatory Public Open House at Guilford College: The First Stars?
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 31 Jan, 2026 at 07:00 pm
- **Event Description**: The First Stars?

What is that red dot seen in the recent James Webb Space Telescope image. One of the first stars, a young black hole, or something even more exotic? These are three of the published suggestions for what it might be. It is more than 13 billion light years away; so very old and very bright. Prof. Thom Espinola will discuss the image, the possible explanations and their background, and why it’s important to astronomers at a Guilford College observatory open house. The program will start at 7pm Saturday January 31 in our planetarium dome. We will then observe the sky using the college’s telescopes, weather permitting. The event is free, no tickets are required, and families with children are welcome.
