A Leslie-Lohman Museum Fellow and artist resident atthe Virginia Center for the Arts, Torres has exhibited widely inmuseums and galleries including The Bronx Museum of Art,Tacoma Art Museum, Leslie-Lohman Museum, and Cheim &Read. His work is held in the permanent collection of the NationalMuseum of Ecuador. Torres’s paintings have been featured in TheNew York Times, Hyperallergic, and Out Magazine, as well as infilms and television including Keep the Lights On, Love IsStrange, American Horror Story, and Only Murders in theBuilding. He is represented by Kates-Ferri Projects, New York.During his stay at Uncommon Artist Residency, he plans to continue and deepen my ongoing series of figurative paintings on wood panels. Working in intimate formats, my practice draws source material from film stills, particularly from 1980s European cinema, mining their light, mood, and emotional nuance. By cropping, editing, and reworking these images,he transform moments from moving narratives into quieter, more contemplative compositions that foreground atmosphere, tenderness, and the beauty of light."Cinema has shaped my artistic vision from an early age. Growing up in a small town in Ecuador with a single movie theater, I was introduced to a wide range of films, from 1970s martial arts movies to French art house cinema, Italian horror, and pre-Code Hollywood films. I became captivated by the idea that each film frame functioned like a painting, carefully constructed to tell a story through light, color, and character. Before streaming was possible, I photographed paused scenes with a Polaroid to capture images to paint from, a process that continues to inform my approach today.My paintings create a cinematic atmosphere in which figures hover between recognition and ambiguity, inviting viewers into intimate, voyeuristic encounters. Some characters appear unaware of our presence, while others seem caught mid-act, their vulnerability rendered through lush paint strokes of light, color, and flesh.
