- **Event Description**: From politics and social media to our workplaces and personal relationships, disagreements are inevitable. Can we find ways to disagree productively? Is it worth the effort? While it's important to learn how to disagree in healthy, constructive ways, it's equally important to recognize that not every conflict deserves a conversation. Together with Mauthe program director Robert Pyne, UWGB professors Jennie Young and Ryan Martin will explore how to know when disagreements are worth engaging, and how to approach those interactions with healthy curiosity. They will also discuss ways to disengage when healthy boundaries seem to be the better choice.

Dr. Ryan Martin (aka the Anger Professor) is an expert on emotional wellness and anger management. He helps people master emotional challenges and harness the power of emotions—especially anger—for personal growth and success. His work focuses on delivering practical, research-backed strategies through clear, direct, and actionable advice. Martin is the author of Emotion Hacks: 50 Ways to Feel Better Fast, Why We Get Mad: How to Use Your Anger for Positive Change, and How to Deal with Angry People. He also hosts The Lantern Podcast, a showcase of personal stories of resilience, transformation, and emotional insight. In his TED Talk, “Why We Get Mad—and Why It’s Healthy,” Martin draws from his career studying what makes people mad to explain the underlying factors beneath most anger—and why a healthy dose of it can actually be useful. In his role as Dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UWGB, Martin combines academic leadership with a commitment to public scholarship. His work has been featured by the New York Times, This Past Weekend w/ Theo Von, The Prof G Pod w/ Scott Galloway, BBC Radio’s Digital Human, Buzzfeed, HuffPost, TED.com, and other major media outlets.

Dr. Jennie Young is Professor of English and Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies at UWGB, and she is the Director of the Writing Foundations program. She publishes work in creative nonfiction, humor, feminism, applied rhetoric, and education. Young has a Ph. D. in rhetoric and discourse studies from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and a certificate in satire writing from The Second City Chicago. Her Burned Haystack Dating Method, drawn from her own experience, applies her expertise in rhetoric to the world of online dating. What began as a small experiment in applied rhetoric quickly bloomed into a vibrant social movement. A small community of people testing Young’s idea ended up attracting 120,000 members to a dedicated Facebook group and nearly 60,000 followers on Instagram. Young’s work has also been featured in The New York Times, HuffPost, and Newsweek.
