This talk takes you on a journey from early human sounds and gestures to the many ways we communicate today. Along the way, we will explore how culture, movement/migration, and technology shape the words we use. By the end of this conversation, you will discover that language is not fixed; it is alive, constantly changing as people connect, create, and share meaning across time and place.

Presenter Bio:

Dr Adesoji Babalola is an Assistant Professor (Term Adjunct) in the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at Queen’s University, Kingston-Ontario, Canada, and postdoctoral research fellow in the Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). His academic background is in linguistics, and he obtained his PhD in Cultural Studies from Queen’s University in 2025. He is a recipient of the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and Morgan Brown Graduate Fellowship. His areas of expertise span youth cultures, global hip hop, Afrobeats, creative industries, postcolonial literature, Black Studies, (global) Indigenous studies, linguistic anthropology, and museum studies. He has delivered many peer-reviewed conference presentations and published several refereed articles.
