The original house, built c1570, has been altered little since its remodelling in 1699. In 1936, Lady Carlyle laid out the Arts and Crafts garden, with yew hedges, pleached limes, a Long Walk, a water garden and a walled garden. In 1971 the property was acquired by Hugh Johnson, the well-known writer on wine and gardening. Using the framework provided by Lady Carlyle, he extensively and skilfully replanted the gardens. The latest owners, Matthew and Jennifer O’Connell, are undertaking a comprehensive programme of work building on this legacy. The 12-acre Grade II listed garden combines an historic ornamental walled garden with a large surrounding park, full of rare trees, with orchard, wildflower meadow and water garden. Our visit will take place when the many roses in the garden are at their peak.Itinerary: Visitors will gather at 14:00 with a tour of the garden to begin at 14:15. Tea and cakes will be provided by the hosts following the tour.Directions by car: From the A120, take the B1417 exit towards B1256/Felsted/Stebbing. Follow the B1417 to Dunmow Rd/B1256 and turn left. After 200 yards turn right, continuing on to The Street. Take a slight right onto Piccotts Lane and park at The Salings Millenium Hall.
