Birdhouse Class

Join "TWO CHICKS" Birdhouses & Feeders and build a birdhouse at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge! "TWO CHICKS" mission is to facilitate the conservation of birds and other wildlife. They custom design, build, and provide houses and feeders specific to the species.

The $40 ticket price includes all supplies and a donation to the Friends of Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. Guided instruction provided. Children ages 8 and up welcome, with adult supervision, please. The small rhombus birdhouse is suitable for wrens, titmice and chickadees. It includes a 1 1/8 inch hole with a metal guard to reduce the risk of predators from entering. It is made of untreated cedar and opens for easy clean out. Participants will assemble the sides with screws and pre-drilled holes. They will screw on the latch and guard. Also, eyelets with a chain will be added to make for easy yard placement. Once complete, sanding will be needed. Participants will then be offered the opportunity to torch the house which is Japanese Art that helps preserve wood and reduce mold and fungal growth. The finished house will then be coated with linseed oil to help preserve the wood for outdoor use.
