Create an heirloom hand carved wood spoon! Participants will learn how to carve a wooden spoon using a traditional hook knife, sloyd type knife, rasps, hatchet, scraper, spokeshave, and sandpaper. We will cover how to use a hook knife, how to read the grain pattern of wood to determine how to carve, how to map out a spoon on a block of wood, what woods are suitable for making spoons, carving “green” wood versus dry, and how to create a spoon. Safe use of tools will also be emphasized.
No experience necessary. Ages 13-17 must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

Cost:  (plus an optional $40 materials charge)
All materials will be provided. The $10 materials fee covers the cost of the wood for your spoons and sandpaper. If a participant would like to keep the Narex hook knife used to carve their spoon the cost will be an additional $40. Participants will need to bring a very sharp Morakniv, Flexcut,“Sloyd” knife or similar. These can be purchased online or perhaps at local hardware or regional woodworking stores. Participants may also want to bring Kevlar gloves (available online or possibly Bass pro, Academy Sports, and Harbor freight.

Tom Brown is a retired educator who began his teaching adventure in a middle grades industrial arts classroom. Prior to teaching he had experience in furniture manufacturing and antique furniture restoration. When he's not working in his shop he's probably either picking on a banjo or working on his cabin on the Cumberland plateau.
