# Event Details

- **Event Name**: Making a Mystery
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 23 May, 2026 at 01:00 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Have you ever wondered how authors craft the twisty mysteries we all love to read? Wonder no longer! Join authors Kate Flora, Dick Cass, and Matt Cost at Gray Public Library as they present MYSTERY MAKING!

Kate Flora, Dick Cass, and Matt Cost will work together with the audience to create a mystery on the spot! Attendees will be asked to fill out five slips of paper upon entering the library including a character name, possible occupations, a setting for the mystery, a weapon that was used, and the motive for the murder. Yes, there will be a murder! These slips of paper will be dropped into the corresponding bag for the authors to pull from and create a mystery, with audience participation, creating a mystery from scratch from beginning to end. The authors will share insights into their processes throughout the program.

This free event is open to all and no registration is necessary! For more information, email akazilionis@graymaine.org. Read on for more information about each author!

Kate Flora:

Defying her agent’s instruction to stick to one thing, Kate Flora, always up for a new writing adventure, has published police procedurals, strong women mysteries, true crime, romantic suspense, memoir, and short stories. From riding an ATV deep into the Canadian woods to going on stakeouts where she spotted the bad guys to riding in a truck while someone in the backseat holds a shotgun, she does what it takes to make the work feel authentic. An Edgar, Agatha, Anthony, and Derringer finalist, two-time Maine Literary Award winner, and winner of the Public Safety Writers award for non-fiction, Flora has even won awards for her unpublished books. She’s always hoping her next reward will be you as a reader.

Matt Cost:

Matt Cost has written six books in the Mainely Mystery series starting with "Mainely Power", six books in the Clay Wolfe Trap series starting with "Wolfe Trap", and two books in the Brooklyn 8 Ballo series starting with "Velma Gone Awry". "EveryThing vs Max Creed" will be his second book in the Modern-Day Chronicles of Max Creed. A few historical fiction pieces fill out the shelves. Cost lives in Brunswick, Maine.

Dick Cass:

Richard Cass, a native of Boston and a walker of its streets, writes the Elder Darrow jazz mystery series, in which an alcoholic buys a dive bar in the old South End, hoping it will help him get sober. He also writes a series about a disaffected US Army veteran, Ardmore Theberge, who considers himself enough of an altruist to help solve people’s problems. Cass’s books have won the Maine Literary Award and the Nancy Pearl Prize for Genre Fiction, among others. The next book in the Ardmore Theberge series, Hard as a Headstone, will be published by Islandport Press in September, 2026. Cass lives and writes on the coast of Maine.
