Heather Lake is one of those hikes that feels like a true alpine reward without too much heavy lifting. This 4.9-mile round-trip trail climbs steadily through a forest full of old-growth stumps (reminders of early logging days) before breaking out to a stunning cirque lake nestled beneath the cliffs of Mount Pilchuck. On a calm morning, the lake is a mirror — reflecting stone walls, lingering snowfields, and the sky above.

By mid-July, the trail is usually snow-free, though sections can still be muddy from runoff, so sturdy waterproof shoes are a good idea. The lake basin is cool and breezy, offering a refreshing reward after the climb. This is also one of those trails where the journey is as beautiful as the destination, with boardwalks, streams, and lush greenery along the way.

The hike climbs about 1,100 feet, making it a moderate challenge but well within the Tenderfoot stride. The payoff at the lake is perfect for lingering — whether that’s a snack break, a round of photos, or just sitting quietly and breathing in the mountain air.

We’ll meet at the Heather Lake Trailhead at 9:15 am. Parking is limited here, so carpooling is encouraged. Bring layers, as the shade around the lake can keep the air crisp even on a warm summer day.

We can meet in the far north end of the north parking lot at the Green Lake Park and Ride, and directly under the I-5 freeway at 8 am. Since we are heading north, we can also stop off at the Ash Way Park and Ride at 8:20 am to either pick up additional riders or further coordinate rideshares. Rideshare for the day is $14 per person from the Green Lake Park n Ride and $11 per person from the Ash Way Park n Ride, and is paid to the driver of the vehicle.

Ash Way Park n Ride, 8:20 am, $11
Our estimated time of arrival at the trailhead is: 9:15 am

Yes, there are two separate fees regarding this event. The event fee, and then a rideshare if you are riding as a passenger with a driver.
