- **Event Description**: Join artists Jess Holdengarde, Harriet Crisp, and Robbie Thomson for a free workshop exploring stories and sounds of water in Grangemouth.About this EventGrangemouth’s industrial past and present has been shaped by water, from its shipbuilding history to its present-day operation as a trade port central to Scotland’s economy. Water also features in potential futures for the town, with projected high flood risk and plans to develop waterside low-carbon manufacturing industries. We want your stories, memories, and perspectives to bring these watery pasts, presents, and futures to life!Funded by FORTH2O and supported by the University of Stirling and Grangemouth Heritage Trust, Jess, Harriet, and Robbie invite you to a free workshop to listen, record, and reflect alongside local water bodies through film, sound, and walking. This is an opportunity to:~ learn about your local heritage and environment~ meet others~ gain skills in sound recording~ share your perspectives on Grangemouth’s future with policymakers and decisionmakers.With participants’ consent, stories, memories, perspectives, and recordings gathered during the workshops will be used within the artists’ film projects as part of FORTH2O, as a way of holding and reflecting the shared experiences and rhythms of the sessions.Programme~ 10am-11am - Introductions, film screening, and sound listening~ 11am-11:30am - Introduction to sound recording~ 11:30am-12pm - Visit to Grangemouth Heritage Trust~ 12pm-1pm - Walk along the Charlotte Dundas Heritage Trail~ 1pm-2pm - Lunch~ 2pm-2:45pm - Listening session and discussionNo previous experience of with sound equipment, film, or the arts is required. We welcome people from all backgrounds and levels of experience. All equipment will be provided.Lunch and transport will be provided. Travel expenses (up to £20 per person) will be reimbursed. The workshop will involve walking, so participants should be comfortable walking moderate distances and are advised to wear sturdy, weather-appropriate footwear. We look forward to meeting and working with you!About FORTH2OPeople understand the value of water in many ways, such as a resource to be used for households, recreation, business, and tourism, or conserved to protect biodiversity and local community. Hence, maintaining a sustainable water system requires us to identify how people, businesses, communities, and governments use water, and the trade-offs that arise.FORTH2O is funded by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) to inform and address these issues. It is a local policy innovation partnership (LPIP) in the region covering the Forth Water Basin: Fife, Clackmannanshire, Stirling, Falkirk, Edinburgh and the Lothians. FORTH2O is working with partners across academia, government, policy, industry, community and voluntary sectors to codesign research and policy innovations to support a more connected, resilient, and equitable water system that better serves the needs of people and the environment.About the ArtistsJess HoldengardeJess Holdengarde (b.1991) is a South African lens-based artist, living on the Isle of Lewis with their studio based in Glasgow. Their work examines photography’s role in responding to environmental, social, and economic crises, focusing on how image-making can inspire critical reflection and hopeful action within the polycrisis.Through experimental darkroom techniques, site-specific approaches, and embodied practice, they integrate sustainable methods across photography, writing, sound, and moving image. Their practice often unfolds through collective and collaborative methods, creating spaces for shared knowledge, experimentation, and dialogue.Holdengarde has exhibited internationally in Germany, South Africa, Switzerland, and the UK. In 2024, they were the recipient of the Verzasca Foto Artist-in-Residence programme in Switzerland and presented their first major solo exhibition at Stills Centre for Photography in Edinburgh. They are currently Stirling University’s selected Artist-in-Residence, with upcoming solo exhibitions in Scotland and Switzerland this year.Harriet CrispHarriet Crisp is an artist-researcher currently pursuing a PhD in Film and Media Studies at the University of Stirling. Her research interests include place-based and participatory arts and heritage practices, archival reactivation, environmental humanities, energy heritage and futures, and ecocritical and phenomenological approaches to film studies. Harriet’s doctoral project investigates past, present, and future imaginaries of water in the Forth Water Basin and is linked to FORTH2O, a UKRI-funded Local Policy Innovation Partnership that aims to support solutions to challenges relating to water in the Basin.Robbie ThomsonRobbie Thomson is a Scottish multimedia artist working between visual art, music and theatre, based on the Isle of Lewis. Robbie's interests include the interplay of technology and consciousness, psychology, cybernetics, industrial landscapes and megalithic sites. He often experiments with technology in his projects: past works include music made with a high voltage Tesla coil and an immersive large scale robotic installation in Glasgow’s Clyde Tunnel.Alongside his artistic practice, Robbie works as a designer and educator. Commissions include lighting, set design, video and music work for theatre and film productions in Scotland and internationally. In 2011 Robbie was a founding director of independent arts venue the Glue Factory in Glasgow and in 2013 he became an associate artist with Cryptic. Robbie has worked as a collaborator with theatre companies such as Untitled Projects, NVA, Common Wealth Theatre and National Theatre of Scotland.From 2010 to 2015 he was a member of 85A, a Glasgow based DIY collective that produced large scale installations and performances. Robbie has toured widely, presenting work at festivals and galleries throughout the UK, Europe, Indonesia, Mexico, Korea, Colombia and Australia. In 2025 he founded HAAR Projects, a company that delivers ambitious and impactful projects in the Western Isles.
