“Cinema at its mightiest and holiest,” says critic Owen Gleiberman of this film. “A cathedral of the senses.” A criminally under-seen (and recent) masterpiece, Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life (2019) is a culmination of a lifetime dedicated to a singular cinematic vision devoted to grace, life, spirit, morality, celestialitiy, and love. The film tells the true story of Franz Jägerstätter, an Austrian farmer who refused to swear allegiance to Hitler during World War II — an act of defiance, seemingly inconsequential against the magnitude of the régime of the Nazis, whose moral stance and dedication to the goodness of the world ripples through his small community, becoming a colossal inquiry into the cost of righteousness and decency in a corrupted world. A Hidden Life is Malick’s most direct and devotional work, and is a testament to the sanctity of integrity, love, and nature in the face of seemingly immovable evil.

Before the film, the Grand Rapids Film Society will offer a brief introduction to help set the scene and provide context for the films production, and GRAM staff will share insights on how each film connects to the history of landscape painting.
