Rooted in the heart of West Michigan, Red Thyme is a dynamic bluegrass band steeped in tradition yet unafraid to explore the boundaries of the genre. Hailing from Grand Rapids, this five-piece string outfit delivers tight harmonies, masterful musicianship, and an authentic stage presence that has made them a rising name in the Midwest acoustic scene.
Fronted by Hals Smedstad (lead vocals and guitar) and Jeremiah Wenger (guitar), the band also features Jeff Valensky on upright bass, Tyler Littleton on mandolin, and Austin Benzing on banjo. Together, they bring a cohesive sound defined by rich vocal harmonies and sharp instrumental interplay.
Known for their seamless musical chemistry and compelling live performances, Red Thyme brings together the soulful grit of traditional bluegrass with fresh, modern sensibilities. In August 2025, Red Thyme completed a highly successful East Coast tour, playing to enthusiastic crowds from Harpers Ferry, WV to Charleston, SC. Sharing their music with hundreds across historic venues and vibrant listening rooms, the tour marked a major milestone for the band and showcased their ability to connect with audiences far beyond their Michigan home.

The Stray is a music and arts cafe located in Grand Rapids, MI. In addition to our craft beer, coffee and wine selection, our kitchen will be open serving our full dinner menu until 9pm! Get here early to snag your favorite seat and grab a bite to eat before the show begins. This show is free to attend, but you can support artists through tips.
The Stray curates a listening room style venue, where performers are front and center, not background entertainment. We frequently ask attendees to silence their phones and keep conversations low out of respect to performers and other audience members.
