From boosting the ego of a retired actor (Akira Emoto) by posing as a journalist to pretending to be the father of a girl (Shannon Mahina Gorman) to help her gain admission to a private school, Phillip’s well-paying jobs throw him into the lives of his clients. As he becomes more involved, the lines between performance and reality blur, and his empathetic nature pulls him deeper into their stories, sometimes off-script.

The film explores themes of found family, cultural connection, and the masks we wear. It’s a slow-paced, heartfelt drama that examines the good and bad that come from the lies we tell ourselves and others."

It's wonderful to see Brendan Fraser getting back into acting after his heart-breaking leave of absence from Hollywood; under controversial, to say the least, circumstances.  This movie is so well done and explores a Japanese cultural phenomena that most people know little about.  Subject matter that could come off as cheesy is shown with great compassion and care.  Brendan definitely sells it, and it'll tug at your heart. 

Note that this month we are meeting on Tuesday, March 17, instead of our normal third Thursday. We gather in the Guild Room at 5:30pm for snacks and fellowship and the film starts at 6pm. Bring a snack and/or drink to share and $5 if you’d like pizza.
