Artist Statement :
Out among the trees exists a language without words where, when the mind is quiet, one observes the fullness of being, the fullness of the manifest world. This simple state has its ecstatic qualities. I am interested in this state—in the nature of consciousness, and relations between the physical and the metaphysical-- and in exploring this nexus in painting.
These paintings are generated by an intimate and perhaps obsessive relationship to the forest, to the tangled masses of vines, leaves, branches, light and shadows-- the mysterious, forbidding, enticing drama of the places that leap into ecstatic pattern, rhythm, movement of light and color. They grow out of imagery from the dense, lyrical forests of northern Michigan.
