This question has informed creators of science fiction in construction of expansive universes, aspirational utopias, and countless versions of apocalypse.  The genre has close association with “futuristic aesthetics,” a broad and evolving concept. This lecture explores the history and function of design within science fiction film and television, both classic and contemporary. Learn how set design is used to communicate sociopolitical values, how objects from the present can translate into the future, why certain styles feel at home in dystopias, and on which spaceship to spot your favorite chair.

Eno Farley(@startrekdesign) is a scholar of design history, sci-fi nerd, and creator of Star Trek + Design, a project chronicling the use of industrial design in the Star Trek franchise. His research and interviews have been featured in publications such as GQ, Visla, and For Scale. Originally from New York, USA, he’s lived in Gothenburg since 2021.
