Richmond Building, Gosport, United Kingdom
With an introduction from Graham Galbraith, Vice-Chancellor.
Based on his new book, The Perilous Deep - A Supernatural History of the Atlantic, Dr Karl Bell's talk explores the supernatural stories and magical beliefs that have been inspired by seafaring in the Atlantic Ocean. What role did storytelling play aboard ship and in ports? What do stories of omens, mermaids, sea monsters, and ghosts tell us about the hopes and fears of those who lived and died at sea? How did those stories change as nautical technology shifted from sail to steam in the 19th and early 20th centuries? Journey on an adventure into the maritime imagination and discover the power of storytelling on the high seas.
