Edge of the Wedge
Immersion are Malka Spigel and Colin Newman best known for their work with Minimal Compact and Wire.
The project emerged in the early 1990s and has always prided itself on a diversity in approach and an ability to be both self-contained and a vehicle for collaboration. 1999’s
Low Impact & 2018’s Sleepless cover very different aesthetics.
More recent work has seen Immersion collaborating with the likes of Tarwater, Laetitia Sadier, Ulrich Schnauss , Scanner, Thor Harris, Cubzoa & SUSS in their ongoing Nanocluster series of events & albums. The collaboration with SUSS took the form of a month long US tour in March/April 2025 as well as the album.
Malka & Colin will undertake their 2nd UK tour in as many years through October - December 2025 in support of a new Immersion album.
They also have a weekly music radio show called Swimming In Sound and play in the band Githead, alongside Robin Rimbaud (Scanner) & Max Franken.
Reviews of Nanocluster Vol. 2 & 3
One of the best albums I’ve heard this century Rockandroll Globe
This is a real treat. Underestimate Colin and Malka at your peril. National treasures.Moonbuilding Weekly
One of our records of the year. Total Swooner - Monorail (shop) Glasgow
Experimentalism collides head on with some immense pop tunes, making it feel like a project that has plenty of immersive potential going forward The Quietus
I was pleasantly surprised at how engaging this record was, and how much space was here for me as a listener to find nuance and peace A Pessimist Is Never Disappointed
SUSS’ pedal steel and other dreamy attributes (harmonica, harmonium, nylon string acoustic) are a perfect compliment to Newman and Spigel’s gently gurgling electronics, and makes for a record that that is equal parts relaxing, beautiful and compelling that never sacrifices melody for atmosphere. Brooklyn Vegan
Nanocluster, Vol 3 is the best neo-Krautrock album I’ve ever heard, period – which is to say, of all the ordinary and extraordinary work in the last forty or so years that has tried to evoke, recreate, pay homage to, imitate AND ETCETERA the original Krautrock sounds of the 1970s, this is the best, the supreme, the essential, likely because it’s not an homage, it’s a language all its own, it’s the blue hypnosis of dreams forgotten and dreams uncertain, it is thrilling, it is sad, it is ecstatic, and yes, it is essential. Rock & Roll Globe
I really want to say that Nanocluster Vol 3 is a defining album of Ambient Country Krautrock, but I don’t think that’s going to go over as a genre name, plus, I think it’s deeper than that. They’ve created a true fusion of sounds and influences that has generated a psychedelic sound for the 21st century. Echoes
The duo of Colin Newman (Wire) and Malka Spigel (Minimal Compact) have a history of pushing sonic boundaries, and with ambient-country collective SUSS joining them, the result is a genre-blurring experience that feels both celestial and deeply rooted in the earth. The Concert Chronicles
