- **Event Name**: Young Farmers Learning Lab Ages (2-5) & (6-9)
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 02 May, 2026 at 10:30 am – Sat, 31 Oct, 2026 at 11:30 am (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Young Farmers Learning Lab is a hands-on outdoor class for children ages 2–9 and their caregivers on our working farm.About this EventJoin us for the Young Farmers Learning Lab A.K.A Farm Lab, a playful and engaging outdoor class where children explore the farm while learning through hands-on discovery. Each session begins with a short circle time introducing the day’s theme. From there, children head out onto the farm for guided activities that connect nature with math, science, observation, and storytelling. We’ll wrap up each class with a story, reflection, or simple craft for children to take home.We value learning experiences that feel natural, connected, and rooted in community. During each session, children will sometimes be grouped by age (2-5 and 6-9) so activities remain developmentally appropriate, while at other times the groups will come together. Mixed-age learning creates a warm, community-centered environment where younger children learn by watching and joining in, older children build confidence by helping guide others, and siblings can share the experience together.Being on the farm offers children a chance to slow down, explore the outdoors, and learn directly from the living, biodiverse environment around them. Through shared discovery, observing animals, exploring the fields, and noticing the rhythms of nature. Children develop curiosity, confidence, and a deeper connection to the natural world.Throughout the season, children may:Learn about chickens and where eggs come fromDiscover pollinators like bees and butterfliesObserve birds and their habitatsExplore pond life and aquatic ecosystemsWatch plants grow and notice seasonal changesDig gently into the soil to find insects and other tiny creaturesCaregivers are required to remain onsite. For our younger children group (2-5), caregivers should stay close and participate in the experience. Older children (6-9) who are comfortable participating more independently may explore with the group while caregivers remain within earshot on the farm grounds. Caregivers are the primary supervisors of their children and need to be available and ready to step in at any time to support their child’s safety, participation, and wellbeing.Sessions are held rain or shine! Nature-based play is all about embracing the elements, and we encourage families to dress appropriately for the weather. Sessions will continue in rain, mud, or cooler temperatures, as these provide rich sensory and movement experiences.Come explore, imagine, and grow with us on the farm!About the Instructors:Henry Prol is an experienced educator, musician, and lifelong learner with a passion for nurturing curiosity in children. With 10 years of classroom experience and a certification from the American Montessori Society, Henry has worked with students ages 2–12, guiding them through hands-on, discovery-based learning that honors each child’s natural sense of wonder. His teaching style encourages independence, exploration, and joyful engagement with the world around them.Henry has a deep love for math and science, especially the big, awe-inspiring questions of cosmology—like how the universe began and where humans fit within the greater cosmic story. Whether exploring the stars above or the soil beneath our feet, he delights in helping children see that they are part of something vast, beautiful, and deeply connected.April Dever is a passionate Montessori teacher and nature-based educator with nearly two decades of experience guiding children from toddlerhood through adolescence in community-centered, child-led environments. She holds a Montessori credential from the Princeton Center for Teacher Education and has led mixed-age early childhood classrooms on expansive forested campuses, designing rich, interdisciplinary learning experiences inspired by children’s curiosity and the natural world.A trained movement and yoga specialist with a B.F.A. in Modern Dance, April brings creativity, reverence for the land, and deep respect for children’s developmental rhythms to her work. She fosters independence, wonder, and meaningful connection among students, families, and the wider community.Safety rules for Farm Lab families:Be sure to stay with your child and keep them under close supervision at all times on the farm. While we welcome your children to explore and have hands-on experiences here, please remember that we are a working farm and be mindful of your child’s safety in their surroundings. We love our farm animals and know that you do, too! Please treat our animals with respect. Please help your child to observe them calmly and do not allow them to chase, poke, crowd, yell at or pester animals. Your child may touch/pet an animal only if invited to by an AOOA team member. Please remember to stay with the group. During class time, we ask that you refrain from wandering or exploring independently around the farm. Please be aware of our restricted areas and observe all posted signage. Please do not enter any tool rooms, barns, or other work spaces unless supervised by an AOOA team member. Keep equipment safety in mind: do not touch any tools, machinery, or electrical components. Climbing on tractors is not permitted.Practice water safety near the pond! You must stay within arm’s reach of your child when near the water. Unless you are a goose, duck, or heron, please stay out of the pond. Our farm uses electric fences to safely contain our many happy animals. Never touch any fence, and be vigilant in keeping your children away from them. These fences are often moved around the farm to serve their varying needs, so you may encounter them in different places from week to week. Clothing recommendations:Our outdoor farm education classes are designed to run rain or shine. Please check the weather in the morning and help your child to dress appropriately so that they can enjoy their time outdoors! For every class, we recommend waterproof boots or shoes. If there’s rain in the forecast, we suggest adding a rain jacket and, if possible, rain pants to stay comfortable during the session. Sunscreen, bug protection, and a sun hat are recommended for warmer days.Inclement weather policy:While we firmly believe in the Scandinavian motto “There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing!” there may unfortunately be times when dangerous conditions prevent our class from meeting. In the event of thunderstorms or other severe weather, we will cancel the class and notify parents at least one day in advance. You will receive a notification via ? (Alix, is it text/email?) by Friday if we must cancel class on Saturday. You will receive a full refund and are encouraged to sign up for a future date that works best for your family. We are so excited to welcome you and your children to AOOA, and to the learning community of Farm Lab.
