- **Event Description**: Join us at Corthell Hall on the University of Southern Maine’s Gorham Campus on Thursday, July 16th at 7pm for Mum’s The Word: “MOMologues” Reading followed by an artist talk reflecting how Allen’s social art practice informs her multidisciplinary art work.

Featuring Tess Van Horn, Stephanie Clay, Reba Askari, Keyla Alston-Griffin, and Juliet Tasker. Directed by Tess Van Horn.

“MOMologues”, created by Brianna M. Allen and directed by USM Theater faculty member Tess Van Horn, asks self-identifying mothers: What would you share about motherhood if you could do so anonymously? This community play of monologues challenges the expectations and portrayal of American motherhood with confessions, vulnerability and wider communal anthems. This program includes mature and potentially triggering content.

“It would behoove a sociology or women’s study professor to bring [Momologues] to the University of Alaska Fairbanks for what it shows, not tells, about contemporary mothers. Momologues forced my introspection and also forced me to consider the reasons for my discomfort. I believe that discomfort is exactly the effect the playwright intended to produce in audience members.” - Hank Nuwer, Managing Editor, Fairbanks Daily News-Miner (Alaska, 2023)

This work is made possible by a growing community of over 100 self-identifying mothers archived at MomologueCollective.com Allen’s work is based on the book, The Momologue Collective: An Anthology by Self-Identifying Mothers, published in 2022.

This project is brought to you with support from The Rasmuson Foundation’s Individual Artist Award Program (2025), The Connie Boochever Fellowship Award in partnership with Alaska State Council on the Arts and the Alaska Arts & Cultural Foundation (2025), as well as the Alaska State Council on the Arts Career Opportunity Grant (2023).
