The talk is part of a series organised by the Wexford Normandy Cultural Association to raise awareness of 2027 European Year of the Normans.
Maurice de Prendergast and the MacMurchada campaigns 1169-1171 AD – highlights that initially the Cambro Norman involvement in Leinster was at the behest of MacMurchada, and the fractious relationship even during this period with de Prendergast leading his troops home in an almost fighting retreat before his return with Strongbow. Hispivotal land grants in the initial settlement back up the necessity that his troop contingents represented. Prendergast was a Cambro Norman of very Welsh marcher lord pedigree and his crossbow troops contained a very distinctive Flemish component – this was already a very ethnically diverse force of arms even before it joined with Mac Murchada's personal forces after Baginbun.
