Whether you're a parent interested in learning or a healthcare provider wanting to learn more about how to support breastfeeding in the office setting, the impact of tongue tie on feeding, or the significance of feeding challenges on perinatal mental health, this event is for you! Let's come together, share our experiences, and empower each other to 'BELIEVE' in the power of breastfeeding. Continuing education hours (12.5) for physicians, nurses/nurse practitioners, and IBCLCs/lactation supporters have been approved. See you there!Day 1 Agenda?: 07:00 AM - 04:00 PMJanuary 9, 2026?: 07:00 AM - 08:00 AMBreakfast and Registration?: 08:00 AM - 09:00 AMBreastfeeding 101: Essentials for Healthcare ProfessionalsInfo: Healthcare professionals have a unique ability to promote wellness throughout the lifespan. Unfortunately, knowing strategies to assist families with breastfeeding is not typically part of the medical curriculum. In this lecture, Trish Wierenga, APRN, FNP-BC, IBCLC, PMH-C will highlight the basics of breastfeeding, the impact of birth practices on feeding, breastfeeding/pumping laws, and resources for referral to a higher level of care for breastfeeding families.?: 09:00 AM - 10:15 AMFrom Hands to Apps: Essential Tools for Lactation SupportInfo: There are many “tools” we use in both tangible and intangible ways to support breastfeeding. In this lecture, Trish Wierenga, APRN, FNP-BC, IBCLC, PMH-C will highlight some of the tools we can use to improve breastfeeding support including a 5-minute breastfeeding evaluation, screening tools, online resources, and hands-on techniques.?: 10:15 AM - 10:30 AMBreak?: 10:30 AM - 11:30 AMLactation & Medic*tion: Information for Prescribers & SupportersInfo: Prescribing Medic*tion and advising on the safety of medications in breastfeeding can be confusing for some healthcare professionals. In this lecture, Trish Wierenga, APRN, FNP-BC, IBCLC, PMH-C will discuss common medications, medications used in common procedures, and evidence-based resources available for both prescribers and non-prescribers to feel confident in advising breastfeeding families.?: 11:30 AM - 12:30 PMLunch?: 12:30 PM - 01:00 PMGAME: 4-Letter WordsInfo: Learning about the benefits of breastfeeding doesn't have to be in a boring lecture! In this first session after lunch, attendees will test what they learned this morning in a fun game of 4-letter words!?: 01:00 PM - 02:30 PMHot Topics in Lactation: Trends, Troubles, and Emerging EvidenceInfo: Social media, silicone pumps, and other hot topics... oh my! Parents are inundated with information (good and bad) every day on their electronic devices and also by family, friends, & professionals. With the changing landscape of digital information and experts by trade or by Google, breastfeeding supporters need to stay up to date on information presented on these platforms. In this lecture, Trish Wierenga, APRN, FNP-BC, IBCLC, PMH-C will highlight information on several "hot topics" in the lactation world.?: 02:30 PM - 02:45 PMBreak?: 02:45 PM - 03:45 PMUnquestioned vs. Under Fire: Double Standard in Medicine & LactationInfo: Evidence-based practice is the gold-standard for ALL medical care and treatments. Or is it? Some topics in lactation are difficult to prove using evidence-based care guidelines and can incite controversy between lactation consultants & other medical professionals. Why are some professions & processes called out for the lack of evidence while others are not? This lecture aims to highlight the gap between medical practices considered commonplace based on tradition & dogma versus practices in lactation scrutinized for using both evidence-based & practice-based medicine.?: 03:45 PM - 04:00 PMQ&ADay 2 Agenda?: 07:00 AM - 04:00 PMJanuary 10, 2026?: 07:00 AM - 08:00 AMBreakfast/Registration?: 08:00 AM - 09:30 AMBreastfeeding Mechanics & Ankyloglossia: Competent vs Compensatory FunctionInfo: Successful breastfeeding is a clue into other facets of wellness. If an infant is unable to feed instinctively or safely, the lactation consultant & other collaborative disciplines are tasked with investigating the reason for difficulty. Trish Wierenga, APRN, FNP-BC, IBCLC, PMH-C will discuss competent versus compensatory feeding, the assessment of & the impact of ankyloglossia on feeding, some controversy of tongue tie assessment between lactation & primary care providers, as well as management of "the dash" of time between the assessment and possible release.?: 09:30 AM - 09:45 AMBreak?: 09:45 AM - 10:45 AMOral Ankyloglossia: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Treatment & HabilitationInfo: Collaborative care is essential to the assessment of feeding difficulties, diagnosis of ankyloglossia, treatment with frenectomy, and habilitation to competent function. In this lecture, Trish Wierenga, APRN, FNP-BC, IBCLC, PMH-C will discuss the role of the lactation consultant and other members of the care team in the management of ankyloglossia.?: 10:45 AM - 11:45 AMThe Family Impact of Ankyloglossia: Personal & Professional Case StudiesInfo: Parents of infants with feeding difficulties, children self-conscious about speech issues, and adults with poor health outcomes can suffer from stress and issues related to ankyloglossia. Trish Wierenga, APRN, FNP-BC, IBCLC, PMH-C will present case studies of ankyloglossia-related issues and improved outcomes after frenectomy.?: 11:45 AM - 12:00 PMQ&A?: 12:00 PM - 01:00 PMLunch?: 01:00 PM - 02:00 PMPerinatal Mental Health and Feeding DifficultiesInfo: Symptoms of depression and anxiety can occur in up to 1 in 5 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers during pregnancy or during the first year after the birth of a baby. Feeding difficulties are well-known as a contributing factor in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). This lecture will discuss the signs and symptoms of PMADs, introduce providers to validated screening tools, identify resources available for referral, and provide support for efficient treatment and habilitation of feeding challenges such as ankyloglossia that can potentially impact the mental well-being of our patients.?: 02:00 PM - 02:15 PMBreak?: 02:15 PM - 03:30 PM"The Dark Side of the Full Moon"Info: The most common complications of the perinatal period are depression and anxiety. Maternal suicide is the most common cause of death in the postpartum period. Maureen Fura and Jennifer Sillman both experienced symptoms of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and both experienced a lack of knowledge of how to handle their situations by their care providers. This documentary highlights the inconsistencies in care, the lack of knowledge of healthcare providers, and provides a call to action for education, frequent screening, and for providers to step up and provide care for perinatal women in the same way we care for other health-related issues.?: 03:30 PM - 04:00 PMProject Postpartum: Supporting Parents with Education & ResourcesInfo: Education on labor and birth is a central facet of prenatal preparation. Parents are given numerous resources on labor preparation, pain control strategies, and basic information on baby care and breastfeeding after birth. But the amount of education that is given to parents on how to manage isolation, possible changes in financial status, perinatal mental health resources, in-depth feeding education, and community resources can be lacking. In this last session of the conference, Trish Wierenga, APRN, FNP-BC, IBCLC, PMH-C will challenge providers to gather resources for parents for the postpartum period, brainstorm ways to distribute these community resources to new parents and family members, and provide results of a parent survey on this topic.
