Our November visit will combine Native American history and traditions, gardening, cooking, art, agriculture, animals, archery, and service to our local community. Shawna will be sharing family traditions and experiences with our group while giving the children opportunities to learn through doing, creating, tasting, helping, and serving. NATIVE AMERICAN LEARNING We'll explore Native American practices, artifacts, gardening techniques, traditional foodways, crafts, and outdoor practices. Children will have the opportunity to learn about the ways Native peoples worked with the land and used natural resources while connecting those traditions to gardening, food, and community. THE GIVE BACK GARDEN One of the most meaningful parts of our day will be helping Shawna with her Give Back Garden, which supports members of our local community. We'll learn about gardening and then put our learning into action by creating Give Back Baskets to share with people in need. 🧺PLEASE BRING A SMALL BASKET for your child to use for this activity. We'll also create handmade cards to place inside the baskets as a personal message of encouragement and kindness. COOKING & TRADITIONAL FOODWAYS We'll have a special opportunity to learn from Shawna's family recipe for Native American Chowder and explore traditional outdoor cooking practices. Children will get to participate in the experience and then enjoy: Native American Chowder/Stew Indian Fry Bread We'll talk about food, cooking, ingredients, tradition, and the ways food can connect generations and communities. HANDS-ON NATIVE AMERICAN CRAFT Children will also participate in a hands-on craft inspired by Native American traditions, giving them another opportunity to learn through creativity and making. NATIVE AMERICAN ARCHERY We'll also have the opportunity to learn about Native American archery! Children will see a traditional-style bow and learn about its use, construction, and history. We'll also have an archery demonstration using a blunt arrow and learn more about this fascinating traditional skill. AND OF COURSE... GOATS! We'll also have time to visit and interact with the adorable Nigerian Dwarf goats at Junie B Farms!
