The mitote was a common celebration amongst multiple tribes across the Southwest and Gulf Coast regions. These were observed by European explorers such as Cabeza De Vaca in the 16th century and later by the French and Spanish in the late 17th century. While this recording of culture by outsiders of whom were possibly hostile to the participants can skew history to certain perspectives, European recordings are the only available source of these ceremonies. A mitote is simply a tribal celebration that was held for a myriad of reasons. It includes typical festival events, eating, drinking, and dancing. Games were common. What religious context these celebrations held is largely unknown but surely played a part in the mitote. The Market House Museum plans to explore this celebration through fun and educational activities. Come join us at the Mitote!

Event takes place around the grounds of Mission Espiritu Santo.

Cost for park entry is $4 per person, free for kids 12 & under. No additional cost to attend event.
