Description:

Octopus, squid, cuttlefish, and the nautilus are all members of the amazing molluscan class of Cephalopods. Cephalopod literally means ‘head foot’. This is an appropriate title as they are known for their intelligence and tentacles. The octopus leads a solitary life, whereas the Humbolt Squid lives in schools of 1200 individuals. Colossal Squid are the largest invertebrate (40 ft in length), while the tiny pygmy squid is just 2.5 cm. long. The deep-sea octopus Graneledone broods her eggs for 4.5 years, fasting and aerating the eggs. Cephalopods are both predators and prey within the ocean ecosystem. What we know about them is just a small drop in the ocean of what remains a mystery. Please join us in our exploration into the biology of these amazing molluscs.
