- **Event Description**: The historical society invites you to a free public event exploring the past and future of the historic Cardiff coke ovens in Glenwood Springs on Wednesday, January 14, at 6:30 pm, at Glenwood Springs Community Center.

The event includes a history presentation along with an update on the ovens’ preservation, with the opportunity for public feedback. 

Local historian Carolyn Cipperly will start the evening with a presentation on the history of the ovens and their importance to the various mines and towns served by the Colorado Midland Railway. Cipperly previously served as the historical society’s project manager for the first preservation phase of the coke ovens, which took steps toward stabilization of the structures. She currently serves as chairperson of City of Glenwood Springs’ Historic Preservation Commission. 

Following the presentation, Jamie LaRue, the society’s president, will discuss the opportunities and obstacles associated with preserving the coke ovens, then lead a discussion on the community’s role in their future. Attendees will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on the ovens’ preservation and contribute ideas for achieving that goal. 

The meeting will be held in the Sopris Rooms on the main level of Glenwood Springs Community Center. The doors open at 6:00, and Cipperly’s presentation begins at 6:30. All are welcome, and there is no fee to attend.
