Next protest! SUNDAY, Nov 30 from 10 to 12!
Pictured is 43-yeard-old Kalim with her new baby in her arms. Born at the Los Angeles Zoo on Oct 10, the zoo now holds captive 7 Bornean orangutans, a fellow primate species which shares about 97% with our own.
Orangutan mothers have the shortest interbirth intervals - 6 to 7 years - of any mammal. This is necessary because the kids receive an intensive schooling consisting of rain forest survival skills including problem solving, making and using tools and info about the hundreds of different foods - where and when to find them and how to open and eat each one.
These orangutans are endangered and zoos justify their captivity and breeding by claiming species survival. But what are they surviving for? Their habitats are being wiped out and efforts to save them are inadequate and failing dismally. And even if successful, what efforts are zoos making so that these individuals can return to ther homeland? How can Kalim teach her baby boy all he would need to survive there? In the zoo, she cant. This baby will only know the half-life of zoo existence.
Humans will often fight to the death to stay in their ancestral homes. We learn this about the history of the indigenous people of the land we occupy, we see it on our phones daily of people in a faraway land. Why would orangutans be any different if they share so much intellectual and emotional traits with us? Conservation should be about doing everything so individuals can live how they were meant to live, not about "saving" an abstract concept such as species. And right now, the way the zoo is doing it, it looks like just another way to stock their prison and sell tickets.
Join us to fight for their right to self determination of the inmates of the LA Zoo! Next demo SUNDAY, Nov 30 from 10 to 12 noon / LA Zoo - 5333 Zoo Drive. Free parking.
Whether you want to hold a sign, chant, do speakouts, take photos and videos, bang a drum, hand out flyers or talk to zoo goers, we have a place for you with our team. The animals need you!
